BBC Director-General issues ‘profound apology’ to Jimmy Savile child abuse victims

The police investigation into Jimmy Savile’s abuse of young girls has tripled in scale to 340 separate lines of inquiry, Scotland Yard revealed last night.

There are now 40 potential victims and 15 police forces investigating the paedophile BBC presenter’s reign of child abuse.

It prompted the BBC’s Director General to issue his second grovelling apology of the week – and announce a total of three independent inquiries.

As well as the BBC, three NHS hospitals, a former children’s home in Jersey and a now-defunct school in Surrey are accused of giving him free rein to attack children. Some victims have named people ‘around Savile’ as being complicit in his abuse.

Mr Entwistle revealed that police warned him last week they would pursue ‘live active criminal investigations’ against suspects.

With more and more victims coming forward, the size of the police investigation has tripled from the 120 lines of inquiry being examined on Tuesday.

Scotland Yard said: ‘We would once again praise the courage of and thank everyone who has come forward.

‘We have officially recorded 12 allegations of sexual offences but expect this number to grow.’

Outlining the three BBC inquiries, each to be run by an outsider, Mr Entwistle said one would look into what happened to a Newsnight report into Savile and examine if there were any ‘failings’ by management over the decision to cancel it. He insisted he knew of the abuse allegations only when reports appeared in the Press.

The second will look into the ‘culture and practices of the BBC’ to establish if they enabled Savile to sexually abuse children at the corporation.

The third will be a broad assessment of the BBC’s harassment procedures, following allegations by stars such as Liz Kershaw and Sandi Toksvig that they were groped and suffered inappropriate behaviour at the hands of male colleagues.

The BBC will name who will run the inquiries next week, but non-executive director Dame Fiona Reynolds will chair all three.

‘The BBC will not avoid confronting the events of its past,’ Mr Entwistle pledged.

‘Jimmy Savile’s victims have faced years of pain. We owe it to them – and to our audiences – to understand how this could have happened, and to make sure that we do everything so that nothing like this could ever happen again.’

He added: ‘Despite our efforts to make clear our belief the decision to drop the Newsnight investigation was taken properly for sound editorial reasons, people have continued to speculate. This is damaging to the BBC and is a cloud of suspicion which cannot be allowed to continue.’

Asked if he would quit, or order sackings, if the inquiries uncovered wrongdoing, he said he did not want to pre-judge them, adding: ‘The watch words are accountability, transparency and honesty.’

The developments came after a TV director who reported Savile to BBC bosses decades ago – when he caught the star having sex with a 15- or 16-year-old girl in his dressing room – revealed he was ignored.

David Nicolson, 67, who had been a director on Jim’ll Fix It, said he made several attempts to expose Savile to the BBC, but was told: ‘That’s Jimmy’ and ‘that’s the way it goes’.

On Mr Nicolson’s claims, a BBC spokesman said: ‘We have been disturbed to hear these allegations. All staff past and present who have any information relating to allegations of this kind should raise them with the BBC’s internal investigations unit or the police.’

Grant Shapps, the Conservative Party chairman, told BBC1’s Question Time it ‘seems unimaginable’ people at the BBC were unaware of the child abuse allegations.

Savile also allegedly molested vulnerable children at Leeds General Infirmary, including a brain-damaged girl, as well as Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Broadmoor Hospital.

In contrast to the BBC’s contrition, none of the NHS hospitals where Savile allegedly abused children has said sorry.

Among the latest allegations, it was claimed yesterday Savile was banned from visiting a council-run children’s home in the Seventies after he molested a 12-year-old girl.

A woman said he was told to leave the home in Leeds after staff found him in a bedroom with the girl.

And former Radio 1 researcher Richard Pearson told Channel 4 News that when he met Savile once, he said he ‘had just had 14-year-old girls’ in his trailer.

Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland District intends to use FSF to provide a Personalised Self Efficacy Advocacy Support Service to support people with moderate to low level mental health issues engage in training/volunteering and or return to work, and will include the following four claimant groups;
• Pre Work Programme JSA customers
• ESA WRAG group claimants with an 18 to 24 month prognosis,
• ESA WRAG Group returners from Work Programme; presenting with stable (i.e. mild to moderate) mental health conditions already diagnosed via relevant health agencies;
• JSA pre and post Work Programme claimants requesting support, who have an underlying mental health condition, who are not currently engaged with mental health services.



The overall aim of the provision is to provide advocacy support and job coaching which helps orientate and change mindset and enables individuals to give proper consideration of work or movement towards it as a realistic and achievable goal.

About me
I offer counselling and psychotherapy to individuals (adults and young people aged 14 plus) I also work with couples providing relationship and sex therapy. I am accredited by both the BACP and UKCP and a member of the College for Relationship and Sex Therapy (COSRT).
I work from a Psychodynamic perspective and integrate other modalities dependent on the type of therapy required. For example, sex therapy is CBT orientated whereas my individual work would be more analytical in emphasis.
There are many different approaches to therapy which can at times seem overwhelming and confusing, so please feel free to contact me for an informal chat to discuss if what I offer might be suitable for you.

Baroness Butler-Sloss and her ‘valuable and important witness’

American ‘child abuse expert’ Ralph Underwager gave evidence, oral and written, to the Cleveland Child Abuse Inquiry in 1987 and was described by the chairman, Lord Justice Butler-Sloss as a “valuable and important witness.” In his oral evidence he asserted the following as proven by research:-

- Abused children are not secretive: cannot feel shame or embarrassment before the age of 9 or 11
- The recidivism rate for abusers is 1% to 2%
- Anal assault was the most rare and infrequent form of abuse and then only occurs with perpetrators who are “rather crazy”
- Abused children are not threatened
- 5% of claims of abuse are probably well founded, as judged by the conviction rate
- There is no therapeutic benefit in an abused child expressing their feelings afterwards to a psychiatrist. He said he regarded his views as mainstream.

Recently Dr Underwager said in an Internet exchange that he had treated victims of sexual abuse since 1953 and in all that time had never met one who blamed themselves for the abuse by thinking they had invited the abuse or was a bad person.

Ralph Underwager and his wife, Hollida Wakefield believe that “ill founded, intrusive, and destructive state intervention in the lives of families and individuals under the cloak of saving children from abuse is a serious widespread problem.”

Ralph Underwager was exposed by an interview he gave to a European paedophile magazine called Paidika, in which he said child sexual abuse was “God’s Will”.

Paidika: Is choosing paedophilia for you a responsible choice for the individuals?


Underwager: Certainly it is responsible. What I have been struck by as I have come to know more about and understand people who choose paedophilia is that they let themselves be too much defined by other people. That is usually an essentially negative definition. Paedophiles spend a lot of time and energy defending their choice. I don’t think that a paedophile needs to do that. Paedophiles can boldly and courageously affirm what they choose. They can say that what they want is to find the best way to love. I am also a theologian and as a theologian, I believe it is God’s will that there be closeness and intimacy, unity of the flesh, between people. A paedophile can say: “This closeness is possible for me within the choices that I’ve made.”
Paedophiles are too defensive. They go around saying, “You people out there are saying that what I choose is bad, that it’s no good. You’re putting me in prison, you’re doing all these terrible things to me. I have to define my love as being in some way or other illicit.” What I think is that paedophiles can make the assertion that the pursuit of intimacy and love is what they choose. With boldness, they can say, “I believe this is in fact part of God’s will.” They have the right to make these statements for themselves as personal choices. Now whether or not they can persuade other people they are right is another matter (laughs).

ROLF HARRIS

It gives me mixed emotions to read about what that wicked man has done, because I used to really love Rolf Harris's television programs, and his songs. It's hard to face up to the fact that the things you loved as a child were rotton to the core.

Why didn't Rolf Harris own up to what he'd done instead of employing expensive liars, oops I mean lawyers, oh well same difference, to cover up for him? Why do they do that? I probably wouldn't have felt so disgusted with Rolf Harris or any of the other convicted paedophiles if they didn't add to their crimes by forcing their victims to be interrogated and made to feel like criminals by covering up their crimes with a Not Guilty plea. Every time they do that what they are doing is calling the person they abused a liar!

The only pleasure I get from all this is that it increases my hope that my own 40 year long ordeal might come to an end before too long, as every time one of this network of paedophiles gets convicted the police (the REAL police, not the criminals in uniforms that are colluding to cover up institutional child abuse and murder and other wicked crimes, that remark is aimed directly at Stafford police) get closer and closer to the hub of this horrid network of international gangsters.

Rolf Harris 'visited Broadmoor hospital with Jimmy Savile'

Alison Pink, who alleges Jimmy Savile abused her at Broadmoor, recalls how the pair suddenly turned up on a women’s ward as patients were getting changed

Rolf Harris was once shown around Broadmoor hospital by Jimmy Savile as female patients were undressing for bed, it was alleged.


Alison Pink – who said Savile abused her at Broadmoor– recalled the pair suddenly turned up on a women’s ward just as patients were preparing to get undressed in the corridor, the Mirror reported. The pair had been attending a fete at the hospital before they ventured onto the wards.


It was also claimed that another victim of Harris wrote to Buckingham Palace in 1995 warning that he had abused her.


The woman allegedly told royal staff: “He ruined my life. You need to know what kind of man you’ve let near the Queen.”


The anonymous letters were passed to Scotland Yard’s Royal Protection Group who deemed them credible and they were logged as intelligence
But they remained filed until Harris, 84, officially became a suspect in 2012.

Scotland Yard refused to comment on the allegations.

Describing how Harris and Savile attended Broadmoor together, the ex-patient, now called Steven George after a sex change, believes the pair were “birds of a feather”.

Mr George said: “Harris turned up one evening out of the blue.

He was being shown around by Savile in an understated way. Normally stars only came if they were there for an official performance but Harris didn’t do one.

“It was also unusual because visitors would come at visiting hours, between 10am and 4pm, but they came in as we were getting ready for bed,” Mr George said.

Harris’ visit was mentioned in last week’s report on Savile’s abuse of vulnerable victims in the hospital, it was reported.

While it found no evidence of wrongdoing by Harris, the report stated: “We heard convincing accounts of a pattern of inappropriate behaviour surrounding Savile’s attendance on female wards at bath time and bedtime... female patients would be obliged to strip while lined up in corridors.

“We heard that Savile followed a clear pattern of arriving on a female ward at just before this time.”

The report adds: “Unchallenged by staff, he would then watch from behind, as the row of female patients undressed.”

Mr George, now 62, first wrote an account of Harris’ Broadmoor visit in his 2012 autobiography “Heartless”.

Alison was sent to the high-security psychiatric hospital as a teenager after she ran away from her adoptive parents and set fire to a property.

Savile was a hospital volunteer and was given his own keys and living quarters at the hospital. Alison was on the York ward when the men visited at the height of their fame.

They then headed to the Lancaster ward, where women who were being punished had to strip in the corridor in front of warders.

Mr George said: “Harris was very famous at the time and had his weekend show. He walked down the passageway of York ward with Savile opening the doors along with a nursing officer.

“Some of the girls came out and there was an unprompted performance of Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport. He then went through to the punishment ward.

"At that time of the evening all the girls on that ward would have been undressed ready for bed.

"We all had to get completely undressed in the hallway in front of the staff, male and female, to show nothing was being taken into our rooms.

“I thought it was odd that he was walking through the female wards and not doing a show. It was strange that he arrived at the same time the women were undressing for bed.”

The boss of hated benefit assessor Atoswas yesterday accused of “living in a parallel universe” after claiming the public was “satisfied” with the job his firm was doing.
Joe Hemming made the claim after being hauled before MPs to explain the firm’s botched handling of the Government’s “work capability assessments” which try to get people off benefits.
Angry MPs told Mr Hemming thousands of their constituents were still in desperate circumstances because incorrect assessments had stripped them of vital financial support.
Mr Hemming, appearing at the Commons Public Administration Committee, said: “Atos is proud of the work it does.
“We have a real passion for delivering services to the citizen in a way that continues to satisfy the way the citizen wants to be served.”
Labour MP Paul Flynn accused Mr Hemming of suffering from a “reality problem”.
He asked: “Do you live in some kind of bubble somewhere – some kind of parallel universe?”
Mr Flynn added he had been forced to listen to “vacuous nonsense”.
He was joined by Tory and Lib Dems in attacking the firm.
Lib Dem Greg Mulholland said Atos’s name was “severely damaged for good” over their handling of vulnerable claimants.
And Tory MP Robert Halfon said: “You don’t provide good service and there is no redress.”
He said the majority of his constituents thought the service from Atos was “appalling”.

We revealed last week how 47-year-old Shelia Holt, who is bipolar, was sectioned after being taken off Income Support.
She was still being pursued by Atos to assess her fitness to work – despite being in a coma after a heart attack.
French IT giant Atos has been dogged by criticism since winning the coalition contract, worth hundreds of millions of pounds, to assess whether people with disabilities are really fit to work.
Charities in August described Atos as “farcical” after it told nearly a half of all people suffering from crippling life-long diseases like Parkinson’s they would get better.
In 2012, campaigners called for a boycott of the Paralympics because Atos was one of the main sponsors.
